The Law of the Gabage Truck

Hi Friends,

This has been going around the internet so I'm sorry I don't know the original author.

Enjoy!

Law of the Garbage Truck

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. He was really friendly.

So I asked, "Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!" This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, "The Law of the Garbage Truck." He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets.

The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so...Love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don't.

Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!

Have a blessed, garbage-free day.

When a Special Person Gives You Pears, Make a Tart!

One of the best things about my job is not only all of the adorable kiddos I have whose lives I have been a part of, but their wonderful parents as well.  There are so many people that are a part of my life who may not have been if it hadn't been for their children.

One such family belongs to my precious Madeline ("Maudin" to everyone in daycare).  Laura (Maudin's mommy) is a teacher at my kid's school.  I knew her by face, but that was about it.  When they came to talk to me about daycare, I have to admit, I was really nervous at first.  We talked for about two hours, me, Laura and Jake (husband/daddy).  Although I do not think Jake had an easy time getting a word in between me and Laura!  I knew from that initial meeting that we had hit it off and even if Maudin was the fussiest baby I had ever had, I would tough it out for the simple reason that she had a great mommy.  Luckily for me, we had a few moments, but most days she was a doll (napping was not a big priority for her as an infant, but I didn't mind).

Daycare, while being very rewarding, can also be very draining at times, just like any job.  I cannot tell how much it means to me to know that people appreciate the job that I do and trust me to care for their children.  This is where the pears come in!

Laura is one of those people who are always so thoughtful, the type of person I strive to be like.  She's the person who will bring a treat in the morning for no reason at all and never forgets a holiday- not even St. Patrick's Day!  For Easter she brought me an adorable card (she always finds the best cards), a giftcard to the best sandwich shop in Riverside and the pretty box with pears on it.

Inside were pears from Harry and David.  I have ordered from Harry and David for people several times, but never for myself, so I was excited to finally try something from there.  I knew I wanted to do something special with the pears, not just slice them and eat them.  So after searching online for about an hour, I found what I am hoping is the perfect recipe for a pear tart.

It turned out beautifully and smells even better!  I cannot wait to try it!

Thank you Laura, for being so thoughtful and for letting me be a part of your lives!

When Life Gets a Little Dirty, Do Some Laundry!

I got ahead of myself....again!  Just as I began to think that the cold, wet days were behind us, I am reminded by my dear friends at weather.com that I am painfully wrong!  A 60% chance of rain is due to set in by about 6:00.  Mother Nature has perfect timing.  Nicholas has Open House tonight so the parking lot at his school will be packed to the brim with all of the parents complete with their infinate wisdom and complete lack of regard for what I fondly refer to as "parking lot etiquette".  If I have a black eye tomorrow, a safe assumption would be that I had an encounter with one of the many morons.
On a happier note, if there is rain, there are no baseball games, which means no board duty for me!!!  Yee haw!!!  A night at home, what am I going to do with myself????
Laundry.  It is a daunting task that plagues my life daily.  There are very brief moments of triumph where all of the laundry is complete, including folded and put away.  Those brief moments last for all of about an hour, then, life occurs in the form of a spill or Megan having a meltdown over having "nothing" to wear and everything she tries on ends up in the laundry.  So, perhaps I will get lucky tonight.  If I finish laundry at about 11:00PM and go straight to bed, that will be about 6 hours that I can revel in being caught up!  I know, I know, I will not be exactly conscious, but hey, I will take my little triumphs however I can get them!

My First of What I Hope Will Be Many.......
Well, here it is.   The first entry of the blog I have been saying I was going to write for well over a year.  So here I sit, pondering....."What should my first enrty be?"  It has to be interesting, captivating and of course drenched with my sarcastic wit and humor....otherwise, you may mistake it for being written by someone else!  Pat says I should write about my kitchen.......ok, why not?

I've been wanting to redo my kitchen for quite some time.  I decided at the beginning of the week that I needed to spend some much needed time and attention on what I see as my neglected home.  To the normal person, it looks fine, I am sure.  Sure, it has resembles very busy lives, but also a warm resting place and a soft place to fall (partly because I love pillows and recently went through this fleece blanket making phase).  However, to me it resembled a chaotic mess and just sort of yuck.  This feeling I think has festered from the simple fact that I have not repainted a room in over two years.  Anyways, I began the week with very ambitious plans.  I was starting with the kitchen.  I was changing the color to red or sage, tiling the countertops, putting wainscoting up and redoing the cabinets, all within 48 hours.  Really? Seroiusly?  Had I lost my mind?  Apparently so.

As the week drug on, reality set in.  There was no way even a fraction of that was going to happen.  In fact, the only way there would be a remote possibility of it coming to pass is if Ty Pennington himself showed up at my door in all his hunkness saying "Welcome home Kelly Durkee.  Welcome home."  Ok, I've got to get bactk to keeping it real.  Because, lets face it, that is never going to happen!  The color stayed the same.  I decided to stick to my New Year's resolution of using what I have before I buy new.  I just put a fresh coat of paint on the walls.  So far, 3 of the 4 are done.  Throughout the week I'll work on it, one wall at a time.  If I do it any other way, I get totally overwhelmed and shut down.  Seriously.

Ideally, I will post photos by the end of the week.....of the FINISHED project!!  Keep your finger's crossed!  I know I am!

Until I blog again,
Kelly  :)
